AMERICAN AND CARIBBEAN
GAMES (CAC) Swim
Team (November 24-29)
has been confirmed. The
8 member team includes:
Swimmers - Angela Chuck,
Tamara Swaby, Mariana
Chuck, Timothy Wong,
Dominic Lee and Jevon
Atkinson. Jackie Walter
will accompany the team
as National Coach and
Michael Lee as Manager.
John Eyre has been
selected by CCCAN as a
FINA starter for the
competition. The team
will leave the island on
November 21, 2002. Good

In one of the most
exciting meets in recent
times, the Y-Speedos
came from behind to hold
on to the WALTER LOWI
SPRINT MEET Trophy,
scoring 1198 points,
just 5.5 more that the
Tornadoes Swim Club
(1192.5). The Flying
Fish Ambassadors
finished third with 249.
The 30 Masters Swimmers,
including Olympian Allan
Marsh, swam in their own
events for the first
time created immense
excitement. The ASAJ
hopes that this will
inspire other swimmers
over 25 years old to
enter future
competitions. An
incredible 64 Meet
records were broken....meet

436 swimmers will today
compete in the
Walter Lowi Short Course
Sprint Meet at
the National Stadium
Pool. In a fantastic
development, a record
number of 30 Masters
Swimmers (25 year and
over) have entered the
competition. The 436
entries is 105 more than
in 2001.

15, 2002 -
Scoring 349 points in a
good all round
performance,
Wolmers Prep today
dethroned Immaculate
Prep as the overall
Champions of the
ASAJ Prep/Primary School
Swim Competition.
Immaculate however
retained their crown as
Female Champion while
Mona took the top spot
in the Male Division.

The ASAP Prep Schools
Swim Meet which
originally scheduled for
last Friday will dive
into action tomorrow
starting at 8:30 AM at
the National Stadium
Pool. While poor water
quality in the pool
forced the postponement,
there has been steady
improvement and a check
of the pool this evening
found the water in
satisfactory condition.
508 swimmers from 22
schools will
participate.

the first ASAJ Swimming
Judges Clinic scheduled
for the new swim season.
The clinic, which was
conducted by John Lopez
and John Eyre who
covered the Time Keepers
Certification Syllabus

Seminar. The next Judges
Clinic will be held on

Jamaica's Janelle
Atkinson will tomorrow
undergo a minor
operation on her
shoulders. It is
expected that the
operation will relieve
pain that she has
experienced for the last
year. Despite the pain,
Janelle won two Bronze
Medals at the
Commonwealth Games in
Manchester last month.
She is expected to
return to full training
in a few weeks

Troy and the Florida Gators. She joins fellow

enrolling at the University of Florida last year.

The Barbadian
Bradley Alley did it
again setting three
national records
again on the second
day of junior
Nationals in Boca
Raton, He set new
age group record in
the 50 back in a
time of 27.72
beating the 27.83 he
set last week when
he led off the FLST
team to victory in
the medley relay.
New national and age
group marks were set
in the 400 I.M. in
4:36.08 and the the
200 fly 2:05.25 for
the third time for
each event. Bradley
is swimming very
well, keep it up!

6, 2002 -
Jamaica's most
successful campaign at
the Commonwealth Games
ended after a very wet
closing ceremony. In all
the
Jamaicans won 17 medals,
including two by Janelle
Atkinson the first by
any Caribbean Nation.
Jamaica finished 13th in
the Medal Standings....well
done team!

Mr. Jerry Olson,
President of ASUA has
distributed the 2003 Pan
American Games Swimming
time standards. As the
proposed
ASAJ qualifying times
fall within the
standards set by ASUA,
no adjustment will have
to be made to the times
previously distributed.
It should be noted that
the 2003 Pan AM Games
will include 50 M stroke
events. ASUA has not
established standards
for the 50's but has
required that swimmers
have swum the qualifying
time for the 100 M event
of the same stroke.

The National Swim Team
returned to the island
today after a very
successfully
Caribbean Island
Swimming Championships
in Curacao. The team
arrived at the Norman
Manley International
Airport on Air Jamaica,
the official carrier for
swimming. The Swim Team
racked up 44 medals and
placed fourth while the
Synchro Team finished
third overall and
won 1 medal.

7, 2002 -
Adding 3 Gold, 1 Silver
and 3 Bronze medals on
the final day of the
14th Caribbean Island
Swimming Championships,
Jamaica concluded it's
best ever performance at
this competition. In
all, the 32 Speed and 6
Synchronized Swimming
swimmers copped 45
Medals, 15 more than in
2000. With an
unfortunate
disqualification in the
11-12 4X100 Medley relay
and some fast swimming
by Trinidad and the Dom
Rep. in the final
session, Jamaica had to
settle for a well earned
4th place finish, their
highest ranking ever.
Well done and
congratulations on a

With the Jamaicans eying a second
place finish at the Caribbean
Island Swimming
Championships, the
swimmers had to make the
final by swimming fast
in the mornings
preliminary heats…and
that they did. Only four
swims failed to make the
finals cut and now the
stage is set for an
exciting finish to the
competition. After
yesterday’s finals
session, Puerto Rico was
the clear leader with
865 points. Trinidad and
Tobago was second with
534, the Dominican
Republic just 4 points
behind and the Jamaicans
a very close fourth with
512. Team spirit and
expectations are high -

Jamaica’s
13-15 Age Group
Synchronized Swimming
team of Nicole ChinSue,
Yasmin Eyre, Rebecca
Wong, Emily Eyre and
Kristin Smith yesterday
completed a fine
competition by winning
the Bronze Medal in the
Team Routines at the Caribbean
Island Swimming
Championships. The
team from Aruba won the
event with the host
country in second place.
The Jamaicans were very
competitive despite a
1.5 point penalty for
not fielding a full
eight swimmer team.
The
Jamaican Synchro Team
who was participating
in only their second
international
competition was judged
to be the most improved
team. The Synchro Team
will return to Jamaica
today on Air Jamaica,
the Official Carrier for
Jamaican Swimming.

14th Caribbean Island
Swimming Championships
to be held in Curacao

announced by the ASAJ is
the largest ever for
Jamaica at this

Swimmers.

in Mid July, the ASAJ
has decided to cancel
the Summer Age Group
Swimming Championships
as the National
Stadium pool will not be
available for the
competition. A shortened
age group competition
has been
scheduled for July 6 and
7 - we hope that
everyone will
participate. The meet
information will be
published this week.

Prep/Primary
Schools Swimming Champs
has been rescheduled for
June 21-22. A Technical
Meeting will be held at
6:30 on Thursday June 13
in the SDF Training Room
at which time schools
may submit scratches and

Due to the high
probability of heavy
rain on Friday, the
Nestle Ice Cream Prep
Schools Swimming
Championships have been
postponed. A meeting has
been scheduled for 9:00
AM on Friday May 31,
after which a new date
will be announced. A
record 651 swimmers from
26 schools have entered
the competition.

The ASAJ Council
yesterday changed the
qualifying date for the
CARIFTA Games from
January to October of
the previous year. The
qualifying period for
CISC and CCCAN is
approximately 6 months
prior to the competition
and it was felt that the
same period should be
given for the CARIFTA
swimmers. The qualifying
times remain the same.

Championships, the
Y-Speedos have extended
their lead,
scoring 844 points, 150
ahead of the Tornadoes
Swim Club who are on
694. The up a coming
Marlins Swim Club are
comfortably in third
place with 191. The

The Y-Speedos have edged
into the lead after day
1 of the
ASAJ Junior Swimming
Championships being
held at the National
Stadium Pool. With the
scoring being based on
the swimmers time
performance, the
Y-Speedos have 220 with
rivals Tornadoes Swim
Club second with 176 and
the Marlins Swim Club
third with 52.
Three meet records have
been broken. Dave Smith
(Tornadoes) won the Open
1500 M Free in a PB
18:07.88. His teammate
Rene Wright erased the
Open 800 M Free record
swimming 10:25.17 while
Speedos Ramon Walton
broke the 9-10 50 M
Backstroke record,
taking gold in 36.09.

and the ASAJ, today held
a press conference where
Nestle's Sponsorship
check was handed over to
Stephan Grant (Queens
Prep), the swimmers
representative. Stephan
then handed the check
over to John Eyre,
President of the ASAJ.
The Nestle Prep School
Champs will be filmed by
TVJ and shown in two 30
minute segments
following the
competition. Over 40
advertisements,
promoting the
competition will be
aired before the
competition.

Nestle and the ASAJ had
made a number of
exciting changes to the
meet format. The meet
will be swum as heat and
finals.
A new Nestle Ice Cream
Plaque has been designed
for the winning school
while the second and
third place schools will
also receive trophies. A
specially designed
button will be awarded
to each heat winner. All
Prep and Primary Schools
are invited to attend.

Over 420 swimmers from 8
team have entered the
Tornadoes Invitational
Swim Meet to be held
April 26-28, 2002. This
the first time in some
time that a local club
competition has enjoyed

Jamaica ended the
CARIFTA Swimming Games
with 605 points to
finish second
behind Trinidad and
Tobago (764). Jamaica's
Brad Hamilton increased
his medal haul to 10
winning the 100 M
Breast, 400 M Free
(CARIFTA and National
Age Group Record) and
4X50 Free Relay (CARIFTA
Meet and National Age
Group Record). The
Jamaicans added 13
medals to their tally on
the final day of
competition.

The Island Aquatics
Synchro Competition
ended yesterday after an
appreciative crowd had
watched the 27 swimmer
entered present a number
of good performances.
Although the Island
Aquatic swimmers
dominated in numbers,
the 4 swimmers
performing as Wolmers
Unattached held their
own and showed great
promise. The Syreeta
Daley coached Wolmers
swimmers were competing
for the first time - we
look forward to further

the two teams
going into the final
session which starts at
9:00 AM on Sunday. Brad
Hamilton continued to
have a fantastic meet
and breaking the 11-12
100 M Fly record
swimming 1:08.16. He was
justifiably disappointed
in the 100 Free after
swimming 1:00.36 to go under
Ramon James 8 year old
record but could not be
awarded the record due
to technical problems
with the timing system.

in the 15 & over 100 M
Freestyle to erase Andrew

Stores (1:49.98).

SWIM-A-THON POSTPONED
The ASAJ Swim-A-Thon
originally scheduled for
February 23 has been
rescheduled for Saturday
March 16. The ASAJ is
hoping that the extra
time will allow the
participating swimmers,
parents and friends of
swimming to raise
additional funding for
the National Swim
Program. This is
critical in light of the
reduced funding being
provided by the SDF in
the 2002 financial year.

Janelle Atkinson wins
500 yard free at the
Southeastern Conference
(SEC) Swimming
Championships.
Swimming 4:50.53 in the
preliminaries, Janelle
led a medal sweep for
the University of
Florida, touching first
in a fast 4:42.88, just
ahead of Sara McLarty
(4:43.48) and Meredith
Green (4:43.55). The SEC
record for the event is
4:41.02. Janelle is
expected to swim the 200
y Free on Friday and the
1650 y Free on Saturday.

Fayettville Arkansas.
