December 31, 2002 - Water Polo Officials and Swimmer Clinic - January 3-5...see the full schedule

December 29, 2002 - The swimmers and officials participating in Jamaica's recently revived Water Polo Program will enjoy the benefit of a Clinic led by Mark Koganov and held at the National Stadium Pool, January 3-5, 2003....more

December 29, 2002 - Jamaica's National Squad swimmers will participate in a Swim Camp to be held at the National Stadium Pool January 3, 4 & 5, 2003. The Camp will be under the leadership of the new National Development Coach, Orlando Estrada. The ASAJ is using the camp to kick off the swimmers preparation for the CARIFTA Championships which will be held in Jamaica, April 19-21, 2003. There will be two training sessions each day.

December 26, 2002 - Jamaica's National Squad will tomorrow turn a new page in it's short history when Jamaica's newly appointed National Development Coach, Orlando Estrada, conducts his first training session. With Coach Estrada in the ASAJ fold, it is expected that the National Squad Training Program will achieve the goal of three session each week. Assistant National Coach Teddy Hales is expected to continue to play a significant role with the Squad. A three month training schedule has been published includes a three day Swim Camp to be held January 3-5, 2003 at the National Stadium Pool.

December 26, 2002 - National Swim Coach Jackie Walter has, for personal reasons, resigned that position. Coach Walter will however, continue to work with the National Swim Team in limited way, as time permits. She has played a pivotal role in Jamaica's recent success in International Swimming Arena and will continue to sit on the ASAJ Swimming Committee. The ASAJ is grateful for the time and effort that Coach Walter has devoted to Jamaican Swimming.

December 14, 2002 - The ASAJ will be conducting a Synchronized Swimming Judges Seminar on Sunday December 15 at the Sports Development Foundations Training Room (31 Phoenix Ave). Persons interested in becoming a Synchro judge are invited to attend - there is no registration fee. The seminar is schedule to start at 12:00 noon and run until 4:00 PM. Helen Eyre will be the instructor.

December 14, 2002 - ATTENTION COACHES - The Coaches Seminar scheduled for December 16, 2002 has been postponed due to the number of Coaches off the island. The seminar has been rescheduled for January 13th 2003...be there!

December 12, 2002 - A seven-member team representing the Tornadoes Swim Club leaves the island today to compete in the Speedo Total Teamwares Winter Championships.....Meet Results

December 12, 2002 - 'Y' Speedos are off on their travels again. Fresh from their victory in the Gold Las Lick Meet this past weekend, two groups will head off on Thursday in different directions to Panama and Plantation, Florida......Meet Results

December 10, 2002 - Jamaica's Abiona Redwood (Johns Hopkins University) qualified for the NCAA Championships by swimming 1:08.08 in the 100 Y Breaststroke at the Miami Invitational over the weekend. Abiona also swam 53.92 in the 100 Free. Congrats Abiona!

December 9, 2002 - Raine Paulson-Andrews has settled in with her new club, Miami Swimming. Raine now has the opportunity to train with two American Olympians, Gary Hall and Christina Swindle....good luck Raine!

December 8, 2002 - The Y-Speedos today comfortably won the Age Group Gold Las Lic Swim Meet being held at the National Stadium Pool. The Tornadoes Swim Club placed second while the visiting Sting Rays from Cayman took the third place trophy. Brad Hamilton (Tornadoes) claimed Ramon James 11-12 50 M Free All Comers and National Age Group Record, his forth for the competition, swimming a spectacular 26.29. Shaune Fraser (Sting Rays) toppled Allan Marsh's 25 year old 13-14 200 M Butterfly All Comers Age Group Record by two seconds when he swam 2:14.97. 90 events were swum, resulting in an incredible 68 new Meet Records....full meet results

December 7, 2002 - The Y-Speedos are in total control of the ASAJ's Age Group Las Lick Swim Meet at the end of the third session. Brad Hamilton smashed three National Age Group Records, including Andrew Phillips 31 year old 11-12 800 Free record. Matthew Stewart broke his own National 800 M Free record while Sting Ray's Shaune Frasier and Jodie Foster added their names to the record book, taking 4 of the 8 All Comers Age Group Records broken....meet results

December 6, 2002 - The Y-Speedos Swim Club have taken a commanding lead in the ASAJ Age Group Las Lic swimming competition being held at the National Stadium Pool. The Tornadoes Swim Club and Sting Ray Swim of Cayman are second and third respectively....meet results

December 4, 2002 - All is set for the ASAJ Age Group Las Lic Swim Meet which starts at 5:00 PM on Friday December 6 at the National Stadium Pool. The Competition runs until Sunday. ..an interesting feature of the competition is the participation of a team from Cayman. Welcome!

December 4, 2002 - Michael Fisher this evening held another Water Polo training session at the National Stadium Pool. The training sessions are aimed at preparing an Under 18 Male and Female team to participate in the very first CARIFTA Water Polo Competition. The next session will be held at the same venue starting at 5:30 on Monday December 9. interested swimmers are invited to attend.

December 4, 2002 - Y-Speedos Coach David Dyke has spent the last three months at a University in Hungary participating in a Coaches Training Course. Word is that two Coaches Graduated with "honours" and David was one...congratulations David, you have made us all proud! David returns to Jamaica on Thursday December 5.

December 2, 2002 - Julie Thaden and Hallie Todd yesterday concluded a very successful Synchronized Swimming Clinic at the UTECH Pool. 39 Swimmers participated. Thaden, who had conducted a clinic in Jamaica two years ago, expressed delight at the improvement of the swimmers. Hallie Todd, an American Synchro Swimmer, assisted Julie during the clinic. She created a lasting impression on the young Jamaican Synchro Swimmers by demonstrating her pool skills which earned her 1st place honours at the 2002 United States Age Group Synchro Champs.  See a short Photo Album.

NOVEMBER

November 30, 2002 - Angela and Mariana Chuck made final of the CAC Games 50 M Free and 200 Back respectively. Angela places 6th while Mariana finished 8th. Tamara Swaby was 1st alternate in 200 M Butterfly - full results. The Team had a great competition...Congratulations to all six swimmers.

November 26, 2002 - CAC Up-date MARIANA CHUCK ADVANCES TO THE 100 M BACKSTROKE FINAL. Jamaica’s Mariana Chuck this morning swam 1:09.72 to qualify for the CAC Games Female 100 M Backstroke final to be swum this evening. Despite swimming a personal best 54:10, Jevon Atkinson failed to qualify for the final of the 100 M Backstroke. Atkinson swam a fast 26.21 to be third at the 50 M turn and was in close contention until the 15 metre mark when he began to fade, finishing 5th in his heat.

November 20, 2002 - Jamaica's CENTRAL AMERICAN AND CARIBBEAN GAMES (CAC) Swim Team (November 24-29) has been confirmed. The 8 member team includes: Swimmers - Angela Chuck, Tamara Swaby, Mariana Chuck, Timothy Wong, Dominic Lee and Jevon Atkinson. Jackie Walter will accompany the team as National Coach and Michael Lee as Manager. John Eyre has been selected by CCCAN as a FINA starter for the competition. The team will leave the island on November 21, 2002. Good Luck!

November 17, 2002 - In one of the most exciting meets in recent times, the Y-Speedos came from behind to hold on to the WALTER LOWI SPRINT MEET Trophy, scoring 1198 points, just 5.5 more that the Tornadoes Swim Club (1192.5). The Flying Fish Ambassadors finished third with 249. The 30 Masters Swimmers, including Olympian Allan Marsh, swam in their own events for the first time created immense excitement. The ASAJ hopes that this will inspire other swimmers over 25 years old to enter future competitions. An incredible 64 Meet records were broken....meet results 

November 16, 2002 - 436 swimmers will today compete in the Walter Lowi Short Course Sprint Meet at the National Stadium Pool. In a fantastic development, a record number of 30 Masters Swimmers (25 year and over) have entered the competition. The 436 entries is 105 more than in 2001.

November 15, 2002 - Scoring 349 points in a good all round performance, Wolmers Prep today dethroned Immaculate Prep as the overall Champions of the ASAJ Prep/Primary School Swim Competition. Immaculate however retained their crown as Female Champion while Mona took the top spot in the Male Division. Excelsior won the Primary School high points trophy....results

November 14, 2002 - The ASAP Prep Schools Swim Meet which originally scheduled for last Friday will dive into action tomorrow starting at 8:30 AM at the National Stadium Pool. While poor water quality in the pool forced the postponement, there has been steady improvement and a check of the pool this evening found the water in satisfactory condition. 508 swimmers from 22 schools will participate.

November 9, 2002 - Immaculate Prep, Mona Prep, Immaculate High and Campion College all take the High Point Trophies at the Crimson Dawn/YMCA Schools Relays swum today at the YMCA Pool....results

November 8, 2002 - The ASAJ had to postpone the Prep Schools Swim Meet today because of the poor condition of the water in the National Stadium Pool....more

November 5, 2002 - The Royals Swim Club led by Stephani Webley's 5 Golds, 2 Silvers and the 6 and Under High Point Trophy had a great meet competing in the Michael Lockwood Memorial Tournament in Cayman. The Royal's won 45 medals overall...more

November 5, 2002 - 508 swimmers from twenty two (22) Prep and Primary School have entered the ASAJ Prep/Primary Schools Swim Meet which will dive into action at 8:30 AM on Friday, November 8 at the National Stadium Pool.

November 5, 2002 - After a years absence, the Crimson Dawn/YMCA Relays has attracted 692 swimmers from 16, Prep, Primary, High and University Institutions. The Meet will be held on Saturday at the National Stadium Pool starting at 10:00 AM. Prep/Primary Schools will swim in the morning while the High Schools and University's competition will start at 2:00 PM....look for results on this site.

October 28, 2002 - Jamaica's Abiona Redwood won the 50Y free in 24.93 to help the Johns Hopkins women's swimming team defeat Franklin & Marshal in a dual meet on Saturday October 26....more

October 27, 2002 - The Y-Speedos today won the AB Short Course Swim Classic scoring 1010 points. The Tornadoes Swim Club finished second with 783 points and the Marlins third with 132. An incredible 51 meet records were broken as Brad Hamilton swam 5 AAAA times and Ramon Walton had 2 of his own....meet results....more

October 26, 2002 - The Y-Speedos continued to consolidate their lead during session 3 of the AB Short Course Classic being held at the National Stadium Pool. Scoring 692 points, the Speedos are 181 points ahead of the Tornadoes (511) and the Marlins Swim Club (73). Eight more have been records were smashed in session 3....meet results.

October 26, 2002 - Y-Speedos take command of the 2002 AB Short Course Classic after two sessions. Fifteen (17) meet records have been  broken so far!...meet results.

October 24, 2002 - 320 swimmers from 8 clubs have entered the AB Short Course Swim Meet which dives into action tomorrow at the National Stadium Pool. The first swim will be at 5:30 PM and the competition will continue until Sunday. The scoring in the meet will be based on time standards achieved by the swimmers. The faster the time, the more points achieved...see the meet summons for more info. Watch out for the results.

October 22, 2002 - The Tornadoes Swim Club returned yesterday from Ocala, Florida where they competed in the Central Florida Marlins Fall Meet.  Led by National Representative Brad Hamilton, the team copped 10 Gold, 11 Silver and 4 Bronze medals....congrats!! .... more info

October 20, 2002 - All eyes are now set on next weekends AB Short Course Classic to the held in the National Stadium Diving Well. After the Blue Seal Swim Meet got the 2002-03 swimming off to a diving start, the competition is expected to be "Classic" as the clubs vie for the top three places. More anon....

October 17, 2002 - A delegation of 26 team members of the Tornadoes Swim Club left the island to participate in the Marlins Fall Swim Meet being held in Ocala, Florida from October 18th – 20th, 2002.  Approximately 350 competitors from the Central Florida Region will participate in the Meet. The team will be led by National Team members and gold medallists from the 2002 CARIFTA and CISC Brad Hamilton and Rene Wright...more

October 6, 2002 - The Y-Speedos today crowned themselves Champions of the Blue Seal Swim Meet, scoring 1026.5 points. The Tornadoes Swim Club ran second with 769.5 and the Marlins Swim Club third with 267.50. Eight more meet records were broken during the final session of swimming....results

October 5, 2002 - After day one of the Blue Seals Swim Meet the Y-Speedos have a commanding lead (576.5 points) over the Tornadoes Swim Club (428.5) and the Marlins Swim Club (149). Two Jamaican Age Group Records and nine (9) Meet Records have been broken. Congratulations to Ramon Walton for setting new Age Group Records in the 9-10 Male 100 M Butterfly. The final session starts on Sunday at 9:00 AM....results

SEPTEMBER

September 28 2002 - The National Squad Training Schedule for October 2 - November 20 has been posted.

September 28 2002 - Due to the Tropical Storm Watch in effect for Jamaica (Lilly), the Blue Seals Swim Meet scheduled for Sept. 28 and 29 has been postponed. Watch out for the new dates soon.

September 27 2002 - Apologies are due to Todd Johnson. With his 1:03.58 in the 100 M Back at CARIFTA, Todd has moved up from the Junior Swim Squad to the Senior Squad. This was not mentioned in the initial release...well done Todd.

September 26 2002 - The Meet Summons for the ASAJ Prep/Primary Schools Swim Meet scheduled for November 8 has been updated to reflect the correct day for the meet. The original summons incorrectly stated Saturday. The correct date is Friday, November 8...see you there!

September 21 2002 - The Blue Seals Swim Club today recognized two of Jamaica's Swimming Champions at a luncheon held at the Jamaica Pegasus Hotel. Allan-Roy Marsh who holds 10 National Records and Angela Chuck were honored for their outstanding contributions to Jamaican swimming. The luncheon is a prelude to next weekends Blue Seal Swim Meet to be held at the National Stadium Pool. Great idea Blue Seals!

September 21 2002 - Thirteen persons today satisfactorily completed the first ASAJ Swimming Judges Clinic scheduled for the new swim season. The clinic, which was conducted by John Lopez and John Eyre who covered the Time Keepers Certification Syllabus and other new information covered at the recent FINA Judges Seminar. The next Judges Clinic will be held on January 18, 2003...be there!

September 17 2002 - Congratulations to the 49 Swimmers who have been selected for the National Squad. The Swimmers will be contacted to confirm their commitment to the programme.

September 17 2002 - ASUA has released the official Time Standards and Qualifying Procedures for next years Pan American Games to be held in the Dominican Republic, August 1-17. The ASAJ Swimming Committee will be discussing the impact that the latest changes will have on Jamaica's qualifying requirements at a meeting to be held September 18. The new qualifying times will be published as soon as possible thereafter.

September 4 2002 - The 2002 ASAJ/FINA Coaches Clinic got underway today at the Liguanea Club in Kingston with 35 Coaches in attendance. Coach Milt Nelms, who has visited Jamaica once before is the Instructor....clinic schedule

September 3 2002 - The ASAJ Selection Committee will meet on Monday September 9 to select the new Senior and Junior National Squads. The squads will be announced after the Council Meeting scheduled for September 11.

September 3 2002 - Jamaica's Janelle Atkinson will tomorrow undergo a minor operation on her shoulders. It is expected that the operation will relieve pain that she has experienced for the last year. Despite the pain, Janelle won two Bronze Medals at the Commonwealth Games in Manchester last month. She is expected to return to full training in a few weeks time....good luck Janelle!

September 2, 2002 - Australia's Matt Welsh Sets World Record in 50m Back on First Day of Aussie Short Course Champs.

September 1, 2002 - Having Graduated from Brown University in May, Jamaica's Angela Chuck has moved to Gainesville, Florida to train with Greg Troy and the Florida Gators. She joins fellow Olympic Games and Commonwealth Games teammate, Janelle Atkinson who has been with the Gators since enrolling at the University of Florida last year.

August 21, 2002 - As the new swim year approaches there have been more club changes for National Squad swimmers. Adi and Alia Atkinson have moved to the Comets Swim Club. The Atkinson's join fellow National Squad Members Jevon Atkinson and Nekeisha Cain who have been with the Comets for some time. The Comets are trained by Coach Chris Anderson.

August 16, 2002 - Allison Bardowell has transferred to Broward Aquatics, a new club in South Florida. Allison's new Head Coach Peter Banks, also coaches Brooke Bennett (2000 Olympic 400 & 800 Free Gold Medalist) and Maritza Corriea. Swim fast Allison!

August 14, 2002 - Late but great news...America's Natalie Coughlin becomes the first woman to swim the 100 M Backstroke in less than one minute, naturally she broke the world record too!...more details

August 8, 2002 - The Barbadian Bradley Alley did it again setting three national records again on the second day of junior Nationals in Boca Raton, He set new age group record in the 50 back in a time of 27.72 beating the 27.83 he set last week when he led off the FLST team to victory in the medley relay. New national and age group marks were set in the 400 I.M. in 4:36.08 and the the 200 fly 2:05.25 for the third time for each event. Bradley is swimming very well, keep it up!

August 6, 2002 - Jamaica's most successful campaign at the Commonwealth Games ended after a very wet closing ceremony. In all the Jamaicans won 17 medals, including two by Janelle Atkinson the first by any Caribbean Nation. Jamaica finished 13th in the Medal Standings....well done team!

Ramon James, Janelle Atkinson Tamara Swaby and Manager John Eyre returned to the island yesterday. The rest of the team will return by the weekend.

August 5, 2002 - Caribbean swimmers had a few good swims at the Speedos Champion Series Competition held in Fort Lauderdale July 24-28. See Tony Morrison's report for day 3-5. His report for days 1 and 2 were previously added to this page.

August 3, 2002 - Janelle Atkinson wins second Bronze. 4 X 100 Freestyle relay National Record is smashed....congrats team!

August 3, 2002 - Janelle Atkinson has advanced to the Commonwealth Games 400 M Freestyle Final. James swims his fastest 50 M Free time since CCCAN 2001.

August 2, 2002 -JANELLE ATKINSON WINS BRONZE MEDAL COMMONWEALTH GAMES 800 M Free

August 2, 2002 - Ramon James and Mariana Chuck this morning qualified for the 100 Back and 50 Back semifinals. Angela Chuck and Tamara Swaby swam personal best times in the 50 Free.

August 2, 2002 - When Tamara Swaby swam her personal best time in the 100 m Butterfly, she also set a new National Record - Congratulations Tamara!!

August 1, 2002 - Janelle Atkinson qualifies for 800 M Freestyle final. Swaby swims a best time in the 100 M Butterfly.

July 23, 2002 - With Tamara Swaby arriving in the island tonight and Janelle Atkinson scheduled to arrive Wednesday morning, Jamaica's full team will train together at the National Stadium Pool starting at 4:00 on Wednesday. The team will have their final training session on Friday morning before leaving the island on Air Jamaica Friday afternoon....more

July 17, 2002 - Mr. Jerry Olson, President of ASUA has distributed the 2003 Pan American Games Swimming time standards. As the proposed ASAJ qualifying times fall within the standards set by ASUA, no adjustment will have to be made to the times previously distributed. It should be noted that the 2003 Pan AM Games will include 50 M stroke events. ASUA has not established standards for the 50's but has required that swimmers have swum the qualifying time for the 100 M event of the same stroke.

 July 16, 2002 - The Jamaican National Records reports have been updated with the 23 records broken or tied  at the Caribbean Island Swimming Championships....look out for the new top times reports, coming soon.

July 13, 2002 - The ASAJ Council last month ratified a new set of by-laws and procedures designed to streamline to Associations operations. The previous set, which had not been update for many years, are now void. Please take to time to review the new laws and procedures. Included are a few changes to the National Team selection rules e.g. the date for CARIFTA times has been moved back to October 1 of the previous year.....more

July 9, 2002 - It's official, Jamaica's Swim Team for the Commonwealth Games will include 5 swimmers and Jackie Walter as National Coach. 2000 Olympians Janelle Atkinson and Angela Chuck will be joined by Tamara Swaby, Mariana Chuck and Ramon James. Look for more information on the swimmer in a few days.

July 9, 2002 - The National Swim Team returned to the island today after a very successfully Caribbean Island Swimming Championships in Curacao. The team arrived at the Norman Manley International Airport on Air Jamaica, the official carrier for swimming. The Swim Team racked up 44 medals and placed fourth while the Synchro Team finished third overall and won 1 medal.

July 7, 2002 - Adding 3 Gold, 1 Silver and 3 Bronze medals on the final day of the 14th Caribbean Island Swimming Championships, Jamaica concluded it's best ever performance at this competition. In all, the 32 Speed and 6 Synchronized Swimming swimmers copped 45 Medals, 15 more than in 2000. With an unfortunate disqualification in the 11-12 4X100 Medley relay and some fast swimming by Trinidad and the Dom Rep. in the final session, Jamaica had to settle for a well earned 4th place finish, their highest ranking ever. Well done and congratulations on a fantastic preformance! Air Jamaica, the Official Carrier for the National Swim Team fly a tired but happy team back to Jamaica on Tuesday at 5:35 PM EST......Meet results.

July 7, 2002 - With the Jamaicans eying a second place finish at the Caribbean Island Swimming Championships, the swimmers had to make the final by swimming fast in the mornings preliminary heats…and that they did. Only four swims failed to make the finals cut and now the stage is set for an exciting finish to the competition. After yesterday’s finals session, Puerto Rico was the clear leader with 865 points. Trinidad and Tobago was second with 534, the Dominican Republic just 4 points behind and the Jamaicans a very close fourth with 512. Team spirit and expectations are high - lets go team!! - meet results.

July 7, 2002 - Jamaica’s 13-15 Age Group Synchronized Swimming team of Nicole ChinSue, Yasmin Eyre, Rebecca Wong, Emily Eyre and Kristin Smith yesterday completed a fine competition by winning the Bronze Medal in the Team Routines at the Caribbean Island Swimming Championships. The team from Aruba won the event with the host country in second place. The Jamaicans were very competitive despite a 1.5 point penalty for not fielding a full eight swimmer team.

The Jamaican Synchro Team who was participating in only their second international competition was judged to be the most improved team. The Synchro Team will return to Jamaica today on Air Jamaica, the Official Carrier for Jamaican Swimming. Congratulations to the swimmers and coaches well done!!

July 6, 2002 - Wow…what a night. Three (3) Gold Medals, four (4) Silver Medals, two (2) Bronze Medals and six (6) Jamaican National Age Group records made this another memorable session at the 14th Caribbean Island Swimming Championships. With one day to go, Puerto Rico are the clear leaders, but Jamaica lie just 22 points behind the Dominican Republic who lie in second place....more....Meet Results

July 5, 2002 - Alia Atkinson this morning broke the Jamaican 13-14 100 M Breaststroke National Age Group record swimming 1:19.83 in the preliminary heats of the Caribbean Island Swimming Championships being held in Curacao. Atkinson is now just .52 seconds off the Senior National Record set by Meera Siva at the 1987 Pan Am Games. Jamaica had a good session and will be represented in most finals. Day 3 prelim results.

July 4, 2002 - Jamaica's 11-12 Boys 4 X 100 Freestyle relay team tonight smashed the Jamaica National Age Group record by over 10 seconds swimming a fantastic 4:05:78 to win the Gold. Janelle Atkinson added another Gold with a Championship Record performance in the 18 and over 200 M Free. Mariana Chuck won Gold in the 15-17 200 M Backstroke. The Jamaica's are in fourth place with 241 points, just 35 behind the Dom Rep and Trinidad who are tied for second with 276.

With 3 Solo performances, Jamaica's Synchronized Swimmers today showed that they are a force to be reckoned with, as Michela Lee finished 7th in the 16-18 Age Group while in the 13-15 Age Group, Emily Eyre finished 6th and Yasmin Eyre 7th. Meet referee, Rose Cody commended the Jamaicans for for being the most improved team. The duets will be swum on Friday.

July 4, 2002 - After two sessions of fantastic swimming our Jamaican swimmers have hauled in 4 Gold, 2 Silver and 2 Bronze Medals while smashing two Jamaican Senior National records, 6 Jamaican age group records and a Championships record. The Jamaicans are presently in fourth place.

Gold - Janelle Atkinson 400 M Free (Meet Record) and 100 M Butterfly, Brad Hamilton 100 M Butterfly and the 15-17 Girls 4 x 100 Medley Relay (National & Age Group Record).

Silver - Ramon James 100 M Butterfly and Alia Atkinson 100 M Butterfly

Bronze - Gillian Stewart 100 M Backstroke and 15-17 Girls 4 x 100 Medley Relay (Age Group Record)

In the preliminary heats, Dominic Lee smashed the National Record in the 100 M Breaststroke swimming 1:08.89.

June 30, 2002 - Alia Atkinson last week broke Abiona Redwood's Jamaican 13-14 Breaststroke National Age Group Record of 1:20.45 swimming 1:20.15 in the Fort Lauderdale International Meet at the Hall of Fame Pool. Alia's record swim was just .90 second off the National Record - Alia is off to Curacao on Tuesday to swim in the CISC. Congratulations Alia...great swimming!

June 26, 2002 - Oops what a boo boo! The writers imp was hard at work below as Mona Prep was reported as winning the Nestle Prep School Boys Division. As the final point standings show it was actually St. Peter and Paul who won scoring 205 points, just ahead of Hillel (197) and Mona a close third with 185. Our apologies to St. Peter and Paul - you earned a great win!

June 22, 2002 - Wolmers Prep today dethroned Immaculate Prep School as the Overall High Points Champion of the Nestle Ice Cream Prep/Primary Swimming Championships. Immaculate, however, were too strong in the girls division at retained their hold. Mona won the boys division while Excelsior Primary, led by five record breaking swims from National Representative Mathew Hilton took the Primary School top honors....meet results

June 21, 2002 - The Nestle Ice Cream Prep/Primary Schools Swimming Champs got off to flying start today with a record number of swimmers participating. Immaculate Preps Faith Phinn and Alexia Roya-Eatmon captured 5 of the 10 meet records that were broken during the two sessions of preliminary heats. Matthew Hilton, swimming for Excelsior Primary, knocked off 3 records.

The 52 finals events will be swum tomorrow, starting at 9:00 AM at the National Stadium Pool. From all indications it should be an exciting session of swimming.......meet results.

 

June 12, 2002 - JAMALCO today the joined list of National Swim Team Sponsors when Leighton Jones handed over a cheque valued at US$3000 to ASAJ President John Eyre. June 11, 2002 - As promised a new meet has been created to replace the canceled Summer Age Group Champs. The competition named Age Group Summer Las Lick will he held on July 6 and 7 (during CISC). This will allow other swimmers to "show their stuff"! A new point system is being tested - lets see how it works. Good Luck. The ASAJ had to cancel the SAGC because of a date conflict with the World Junior Athletic Championships.

June 10, 2002 - A team of 38 Swimmers and 6 Managers will represent Jamaica at the 14th Caribbean Island Swimming Championships to be held in Curacao July 2-9, 2002. The team announced by the ASAJ is the largest ever for Jamaica at this competition and includes 6 Synchronized Swimming Swimmers. Congratulations to the team and good luck...more and full team.

June 9, 2002 - Swimmers and spectators today enjoyed another well organized Sea Fans Dive Club Ocean Swim 2002 which was held at Montego Bay's Margeritaville. Final results will be posted later, however see some of the fun by viewing the Ocean Swim Photo Album.

June 9, 2002 - With Jamaica preparing to host the World Junior Athletic Championships in Mid July, the ASAJ has decided to cancel the Summer Age Group Swimming Championships as the National Stadium pool will not be available for the competition. A shortened age group competition has been scheduled for July 6 and 7 - we hope that everyone will participate. The meet information will be published this week.

June 1, 2002 - The Nestle Ice Cream Prep/Primary  Schools Swimming Champs has been rescheduled for June 21-22. A Technical Meeting will be held at 6:30 on Thursday June 13 in the SDF Training Room at which time schools may submit scratches and request changes.

May 30, 2002 - Due to the high probability of heavy rain on Friday, the Nestle Ice Cream Prep Schools Swimming Championships have been postponed. A meeting has been scheduled for 9:00 AM on Friday May 31, after which a new date will be announced. A record 651 swimmers from 26 schools have entered the competition.

May 30, 2002 - The ASAJ Council yesterday changed the qualifying date for the CARIFTA Games from January to October of the previous year. The qualifying period for CISC and CCCAN is approximately 6 months prior to the competition and it was felt that the same period should be given for the CARIFTA swimmers. The qualifying times remain the same.

May 19, 2002 - Brad Hamilton breaks Andrew Phillip's 28 year old 11-12 1500 M Free and Allan Marsh's 27 year old 200 M Fly age group records as the Y-Speedos continues their winning ways....more

May 18, 2002 - The 2nd ANNUAL SEA FANS OCEAN SWIM will be held in Montego Bay on June 9th. The event is open to swimmers of all ages. Last year swim was great so plan to be there and enjoy the fun .....meet information

May 18, 2002 - After three sessions of the ASAJ Junior Championships, the Y-Speedos have extended their lead,  scoring 844 points, 150 ahead of the Tornadoes Swim Club who are on 694. The up a coming Marlins Swim Club are comfortably in third place with 191. The final session starts at 9:00 AM tomorrow.....results

May 17, 2002 - The Y-Speedos have edged into the lead after day 1 of the ASAJ Junior Swimming Championships being held at the National Stadium Pool. With the scoring being based on the swimmers time performance, the Y-Speedos have 220 with rivals Tornadoes Swim Club second with 176 and the Marlins Swim Club third with 52.

Three meet records have been broken. Dave Smith (Tornadoes) won the Open 1500 M Free in a PB 18:07.88. His teammate Rene Wright erased the Open 800 M Free record swimming 10:25.17 while Speedos Ramon Walton broke the 9-10 50 M Backstroke record, taking gold in 36.09.

May 16, 2002 - Nestle Ice Cream, sponsors of the Nestle Ice Cream Prep Schools Swimming Championships and the ASAJ, today held a press conference where Nestle's Sponsorship check was handed over to Stephan Grant (Queens Prep), the swimmers representative. Stephan then handed the check over to John Eyre, President of the ASAJ.

The Nestle Prep School Champs will be filmed by TVJ and shown in two 30 minute segments following the competition. Over 40 advertisements, promoting the competition will be aired before the competition.

May 16, 2002 - The first CARIFTA 2003 Organizing Committee Meeting will be held on Tuesday May 28, 2002 at 6:30. All Club reps have been asked their Club members for volunteers to work on various committees. 

The meeting which will be held at the SDF Offices on Phoenix Avenue, Kingston 10 will be for all volunteers. Working Groups will be selected at this meeting.

May 15, 2002 - The Top Times Rankings have been updated with the times available to May 15. The records file will be updated by Friday.

May 7, 2002 - Jamaica’s 2000 Olympic swimmer Angela Chuck was this week honoured with the Florence Filippo and Arlene Gorton awards by Brown University for her performances in and out of the pool during the 2001-2002 NCAA Division 1 swimming season. Congratulations Angela!!....more

May 4, 2002 - Mona Prep (Overall Champ) Immaculate Prep (Girls Champ), Hillel Acadamy (Boys Champ) and Excelsior Primary (Primary School Champ) yesterday copped top honours at the Burger King / YMCA Prep Schools Swim Meet.....results

May 3, 2002 - The Nestle Ice Cream Prep/Primary Schools Swimming Championships have been confirmed for May 31- June 1, 2002. Nestle and the ASAJ had made a number of exciting changes to the meet format. The meet will be swum as heat and finals.

A new Nestle Ice Cream Plaque has been designed for the winning school while the second and third place schools will also receive trophies. A specially designed button will be awarded to each heat winner. All Prep and Primary Schools are invited to attend. See the meet summons for more details.

April 28, 2002 - The Y-Speedos held off a late charge by the Tornadoes Swim Club to win the 2002 Tornadoes Invitational Swim Meet at the National Stadium Pool. The results have been posted...Congrats Speedos....well done...more

April 27, 2002 - Tight competition prevailed on day two of the Tornadoes Invitational Swim Meet as the Y-Speedos Swim Club pulled ahead of yesterdays leaders, Tornadoes. With just 41 points separating the top two teams, tomorrows final session looks set to be a humdinger. The Marlins Swim Club is in third and Flying Fish Ambassadors fourth. April 26, 2002 - If session 1 is a sign of what's to come, the Tornadoes Invitational Swim Meets will see some exciting swimming over the next two days. Only 5 points separates the Tornadoes Swim Club (189) and the Y-Speedos (184) at the end of the first session. Session 2 starts at 8:30 Saturday Morning....results

April 24, 2002 - The 2002 Latin American and Caribbean Masters Swimming Championships will be held in Havana Cuba August 25-30.  The Cuban Swimming Federation has invited all qualified Masters swimmers to attend. For more details see link to the LatyCar.

April 20, 2002 - UTECH, Campion College and Immaculate High School swam away with the ASAJ High Schools & University's Swimming Championship honours at the National Stadium Pool. Results and Final Points Standing.

April 19, 2002 - The Amateur Swimming Association's High School and Universities Swimming Championships will be held at the National Stadium Pool tomorrow, April 20, 2002. 446 swimmers from 12 High Schools and 2 Universities will vie for top honors. First dive for Session 1 is at 8:30 AM while the afternoon session will start at 2:00 PM. Stay tuned for the results.

April 19, 2002 - Over 420 swimmers from 8 team have entered the Tornadoes Invitational Swim Meet to be held April 26-28, 2002. This the first time in some time that a local club competition has enjoyed over 400 entries.....more

April 14, 2002 - Jamaica ended the CARIFTA Swimming Games with 605 points to finish second behind Trinidad and Tobago (764). Jamaica's Brad Hamilton increased his medal haul to 10 winning the 100 M Breast, 400 M Free (CARIFTA and National Age Group Record) and 4X50 Free Relay (CARIFTA Meet and National Age Group Record). April 14, 2002 - The Island Aquatics Synchro Competition ended yesterday after an appreciative crowd had watched the 27 swimmer entered present a number of good performances. Although the Island Aquatic swimmers dominated in numbers, the 4 swimmers performing as Wolmers Unattached held their own and showed great promise. The Syreeta Daley coached Wolmers swimmers were competing for the first time - we look forward to further developments.....competition results

April 14, 2002 - Jamaica had another fantastic evening at the CARIFTA Games winning 8 Gold, 3 Silver and 4 Bronze Medals and remain in 2nd place in the points standings. April 12, 2002 - Jamaica ended day one of the 2002 CARIFTA Games in second place behind defending Champs Trinidad as Brad Hamilton leads the way with three spectacular Gold Medal performances. March 3, 2002 - The Y-Speedos Swim Club fought off a strong challenge from the Tornadoes Swim Club to win the Walter Rogers Age Group Swimming Championships. The Marlins Swim Club placed third. Six (6) meet records (see list) were broken during the final session, taking the total for the meet to twelve (12) (see list). ....more

March 2, 2002 - The Tornadoes Swim called in the cavalry and cut a chunk out the the Y-Speedos lead by the end of session 4 of the Age Group Swimming Champs. Just 20 points separates the two teams going into the final session which starts at 9:00 AM on Sunday. Brad Hamilton continued to have a fantastic meet and breaking the 11-12 100 M Fly record swimming 1:08.16. He was justifiably disappointed in the 100 Free after swimming 1:00.36 to go under Ramon James 8 year old record but could not be awarded the record due to technical problems with the timing system.

Robert Terrell (Mercersburg) swam 54.87 in the 15 & over 100 M Freestyle to erase Andrew Phillips record of 55.50. This was the second of Phillip's records to fall in the meet.  

March 2, 2002 - Timothy Wong this morning broke Andrew Phillip's 23 year old 15 & Over Meet Record at the Walter Rogers Age Group Swimming Champ. Meanwhile the Y-Speedos continue to lead with 895 points. The Tornadoes Swim Club are in second with 815 while the Marlins Swim Club with a strong showing in the 10 & unders have moved into third with 120....more 

March 1, 2002 - In a see-saw battle, the Y-Speedos take the lead after 35 events at the Walter Rogers Age Group Swimming Champs. Trailing by 14 points at the start of the session, the Y-Speedos surged ahead to end the session with 428 points, 18 ahead of the Tornadoes. The Flying Fish Ambassadors are in third with 43. February 23, 2002 - After being beaten in the 500, Florida's Sara McLarty had the last laugh today as she finished just ahead of her team mate Janelle Atkinson to win the SEC Swimming Championship 1650 year Freestyle....more.

February 23, 2002 - Jamaica's Angela Chuck has won two Silver medals to help Brown University stay in second place. Chucks medals came in the 50 yard free (23.12) where she was edged by her team mate Liz Daniels (23.01) and the 200 yard Freestyle (1:50.99) which was won by Penn State’s Katie Stores (1:49.98).

February 21, 2002 - SWIM-A-THON POSTPONED The ASAJ Swim-A-Thon originally scheduled for February 23 has been rescheduled for Saturday March 16. The ASAJ is hoping that the extra time will allow the participating swimmers, parents and friends of swimming to raise additional funding for the National Swim Program. This is critical in light of the reduced funding being provided by the SDF in the 2002 financial year. Click here for more information.

February 21, 2002 - Janelle Atkinson wins 500 yard free at the Southeastern Conference (SEC) Swimming Championships. Swimming 4:50.53 in the preliminaries, Janelle led a medal sweep for the University of Florida, touching first in a fast 4:42.88, just ahead of Sara McLarty (4:43.48) and Meredith Green (4:43.55). The SEC record for the event is 4:41.02. Janelle is expected to swim the 200 y Free on Friday and the 1650 y Free on Saturday.

February 18, 2002 - Janelle Atkinson will be in action for the University of Florida at the SEC Swimming Championships being held Fayettville Arkansas. Janelle has qualified in the 200, 500 and 1650 yard freestyle events. The competition runs Feb. 18-23.

The National Squad and the 2002 CARIFTA Team will be announced after Council meets on March 6 to ratify the selection. Overseas based swimmers who which to have their times considered for selection must submit them to the ASAJ by 4:00 PM on Sunday March 3.

February 7, 2002 - The ASAJ Council last night selected Gail Gascoigne as the Manager for Jamaica's 2002 CARIFTA Swim Team. Gail is assoiciated with the Y-Speedos and has worked with club team on several occasions. This will be the first time that Gail as served as a National Team Manager...welcome on board Gail.

February 4, 2002 - Dominic Lee has been chosen as January's swimmer of the month for his four record breaking performances, including one AGR (200 M Breast) during the Karl Dalhouse International Swim Meet. Congratulations Dominic.

January 17, 2002 - Despite Janelle Atkinson's two wins University of Florida suffer first loss of season to the University of Texas.

January 11, 2002 - The first Coaches Seminar for 2002 will be held at the SDF Offices(31 Phoenix Ave.) on Monday January 14. Special Guest Coach Milt Nelms, an associate of Stanford University, will lead the seminar. Coach Nelms is presently in the island conducting a swim camp for the Tornadoes Swim Club.

January 6, 2002 - At its last meeting in December, the ASAJ Council voted to maintain National Senior, National Age Group and All Comers Age Group Records for times done in Short Course Metres Pools. The record files are being developed at this time. 

Although yards records will not be established, the top 10 times swum in yards pools will be maintained and published on this website. To guarantee that your times are considered, overseas based swimmers are asked to submit your results using the form located on the National Team page.
