DECEMBER

December 24, 2003 - Caribbean swimmers do well at European Championships

December 23, 2003 - The ASAJ has made significant changes to it's organization structure in order to better manage the expansion of the sport and the pending takeover of operations at the National Stadium Pool. At the Executive level, a Vice President has been appointed to represent the interests of each discipline (swimming, synchronized swimming and water polo). In addition, the ASAJ has created three new positions in it's Secretariat and is seeking applicants to fill the positions of:

1. Aquatics Administrator (click for additional info);

2. Office Administrator (click for additional info);

3. National Squad Coordinator (details to follow)

Applications for the positions of Aquatics Administrator and Office Administrator should be submitted to the ASAJ by January 2, 2004.

December 16, 2003 - A new ASAJ Executive was elected at the Annual General Meeting held on Dec 3, 2003. Leading the ASAJ into 2004 are: President - John Eyre, 1st Vice President - Locksley Todd, Vice President Swimming - Kendis Nangle, Vice President Synchronized Swimming - Marjorie Scott-Anderson, Vice President Water Polo - Garth Henriques, Secretary - Kristina Chuck and Assistant Secretary/Treasurer Faith Palmer. December 11, 2003 - A Jamaica male development Water Polo Team leaves the island today to play Barbados in a series on games over the weekend. The games will provide the team with much needed match experience. The team will return to the island on Tuesday, December 16.

November 15, 2003 - The Y-Speedos retained the Walter Lowi Sprint Meet Trophy when scored 1412 points stamping their authority over the Tornadoes Swim Club who scored 983 to take second place. The Blue Seals Swim Club finished third with 268...final scores and results

November 15, 2003 - Damian Alleyne (Barbados) posted 9:56.46 for the 1000yard free and 5th for the 100 butterfly in 52.53 as University of Georgia beat Emory University

November 15, 2003 - Janelle Atkinson won the 100yard free in 9:52.50 while Tjin-A-Tam posts 3rd fastest 200 yard breastroke time of 2:06.40 As the University of Florida sweeps South Carolina in duel meet competition

November 15, 2003 - Janelle Atkinson notches three Provisional qualifying times as the Florida's Lady Gators beat Georgia's bulldogs in dual meet competition. She led off the 400 free relay team in 51.25 as they clocked a time of 3:24.40. She took 2nd in the 500 yard free in 4:48.23 and 6th in the 200 free in 1:49.71 an event in which all the competitors posted qualifying times.

In men's action it was the University of Georgia who won the dual. Barbadian Damian Alleyne took 4 and 3rd in the 200 free 1:40.67 and 100 free 46.50 respectively. His US Virgin Islands teammate Josh Laban took 3rd in the 50 free in 20.79

November 14, 2003 - 345 swimmers form 7 clubs will compete tomorrow in the Walter Lowi Short Course Sprint Meet being held at the National Stadium Pool. The defending champions are the Y-Speedos, who edged the Tornadoes Swim Club by just 5 1/2 points. Last years third place finishers, Flying Fish Ambassadors, have not entered the competition.

November 14, 2003 - Damian Alleyne, National record holder for Barbados in the 200,400,800 and 1500 metre freestyle events, and Joshua Laban, the US Virgin Islands "B" finalist at the Pan Am Games, were a part of the University of Georgia team that defeated University of Michigan in a Duel meet contested over short course meters. Laban took the 50 metre freestyle in a speedy 22.90 while Alleyne placed third in the 100 freestyle in 51.37 and fourth in the 200 freestyle in 1:51.46. University of Georgia won 133-110

November 12, 2003 - George Bovell of Trinidad, took first and third in the 100 free (51.37) and 200 free (1:53.13) respectively while Jeremy Knowles of the Bahamas took 4th in the 400 I.M. (4:38.40) as Auburn defeated Michigan 130-108 last Friday at James E Martin Aquatic Centre in a long course metres dual meet

OCTOBER

October 30, 2003 - The ASAJ has named the swimmers who have qualified for it's National Senior, Junior and Development Squads for the period October 2003 to February 2004. The list includes 19 swimmers on the Senior Squad, xx on the Junior squad and xx on the Development Squad, all of whom are to confirm their participation by signing the applicable documentation.

October 27, 2003 - Janelle Atkinson owner of all the Jamaican middle and long distance freestyle continued her Olympic quest with a third place finish in the 200 yard freestyle and led off her University of Florida team to second place in the 200 yard freestyle relay as the Lady gators took the Florida Invitational Title...more

October 27, 2003 - Dominic Lee has been named as Jamaica's lone "All-American" entry in an individual event, the 100 yard Breaststroke. Lee and Timothy Wong are third in the 200 year Medley Relay...Congratulation!!! ....more

October 26, 2003 - The Y'Speedos Swim Club today walked away with the AB Short Course Classic High Points trophy pushing the Tornadoes Swim Club into second while the Blue Seals Swim Club finished in third. The individual high point winners were Kendese Nangle (BSEAL), Corey Richards (SPEEDOS), Chanel Hill (SPEEDOS), Nicole Chin (TOR), Jason Adams (TOR), Jordan Spencer (SPEEDOS), Alford Green (SPEEDOS), Matthew Hilton (SPEEDOS), Tamari Farquharson (TOR), Brad Hamilton (TOR), Audette Lawrence (TOR), Matthew Stewart (UNA) and Anthony Morrison-Vincent (SPEEDOS). October 25, 2003 - After session 3 of the AB Short Course Classic being swum at the National Stadium Pool, the Y-Speedos have a convincing lead ahead of second place Tornadoes Swim Club...meet results.

October 13, 2003 - The All Jamaica Water Polo teams returned from Trinidad with mixed results. While both team played well, the girls team won both games and came out on top.

October 7, 2003 - For the first time on over 9 years Jamaican Water Polo will be represented internationally when an Jamaican All Star Male and Female Team will travel to Trinidad to compete in the Tiger Sharks 3rd Annual International Tournament October 10-12, 2003....more info

September 15, 2003 - The region's best female swimmers had 8 individual  appearances in the top 150 rankings released by the sports governing body FINA (Federation Internationale de Natation) .This was achieved on the strength of  performances of French swimmer Malia Metela and Jamaica's Janelle Atkinson.....more

JULY

July 27, 2003 - Six swimmers, including Janelle Atkinson, have been confirmed for Jamaica's team to compete in the Pan American Games. The other swimmers are; Angela Chuck, Tamara Swaby, Alia Atkinson, Raine Paulson-Andrews and the lone male swimmer Timothy Wong. The team is being Managed by Vilma Charlton and Coached by Jackie Walter. FINA Starter John Eyre has been invited to officiate at the Games. The swim team will meet in Jamaica on August 5 for their final training sessions before leaving for Santo Domingo on August 8th. Congratulations team!

July 27, 2003 - Raine Paulson-Andrews today placed second in the Junior Olympics 100 M Freestyle swimming 1:01.11. Raine, who had qualified for the final after swimming 1:01.60 in the prelims, is preparing for the Pan American Games. On Friday, Alia Atkinson, who is also preparing for Pan Ams, looking in good form when she improved her 200 M Freestyle PB by 3 seconds swimming 2:10.83 to place second....results

July 13, 2003 - A day after breaking Jamaica's Senior National 100 M Breaststroke Record, Alia Atkinson swam a speedy 27.44 to win the Speedos Champion Series 50 M Freestyle Consolation Final and set a new Jamaican National 13-14 Age Group Record. In the same event, Angela Chuck qualified for the final and placed 7th in 27.73. Alia's time is faster that the PAN AM "A" cut for the 50 M Freestyle.....full results

July 13, 2003 - After swimming 1:06.37 to qualify for the 100 M Butterfly at the Long Island Open, Tamara Swaby swam a PAN AM Games qualifying time of 1:04.68 to place seventh. Swaby was just off her National Record of 1:04.03 set at the CAC Games last year.....full results

July 12, 2003 -  Swimming in different meets. Alia Atkinson and Dominic Lee erased both of Jamaica's Senior National 100 M Breaststroke records. At the 2003 Speedos Champion Series, Alia Atkinson swam a fast 1:14.85 to erase her old record of 1:15.25 set at the CARIFTA Games in April. Dominic Lee, swimming in a time trial at the Summer Age Group Sprint Challenge, swam 1:08.70 to ease past his National Record of 1:08.89. Lee swam the time trial to improve his time and chances of making Jamaica PAN AM Games team. The final selection will take place on Sunday July 13, 2003.

In other events, Janelle Atkinson placed 4th in the Champion Series 400 M Freestyle swimming 4:20.17. At the Long Island Open, Tamara Swaby won the 50 M Freestyle Consolation final swimming 27.77.

July 11, 2003 -  Janelle Atkinson swam 2:04.96 to win the 200 M Freestyle at the Speedos Champion Series. Angela Chuck finished tenth (2:08.00) and Alia Atkinson 52nd (2:13.46)...meet results.

July 11, 2003 -  Jamaica's Tamara Swaby today swam 59.35 to win the 100 M Freestyle consolation finals at the 2003 Long Island Open being swum at the Nassau County Pool in New York. Swaby swam 1:00.34 in the prelims.....meet results

July 10, 2003 -  Four of Jamaica's PAN AM Swim Team; Angela Chuck, Janelle Atkinson and Alia Atkinson all swam well today at the Speedos Champion Series being swum in Fort Lauderdale....more

July 5, 2003 -  Raine Paulson-Andrews and Brad Hamilton held Jamaica’s flag high in Mexico City when they won Gold at the CCCAN currently in the final day of competition. Raine's time qualifies her for PAN AM and Brad smashed his own National Age Group Records...congrats both!!.....more info.....results

July 1, 2003 -  On day two of the CCCAN Swimming Championships, Raine Paulson-Andrews won the Jamaica's first medal taking the Silver in the 15-17 50M Butterfly with a time of 30.44. June 21, 2003 - As the 2003 Nestle Prep/Primary School Swimming Championships came to an exciting close, Immaculate Prep won the Overall and Female High Points Trophy while Excelsior Primary walked away as the top Primary School. Stella Maris returned to top form, winning the Male Division.....results

June 5, 2003 - The ASAJ yesterday named five swimmers to represent Jamaica at the 2003 PAN AM Games which will be held in the Dominican Republic this summer. Three others were named provisionally but their final selection will depend on their performance at the CCCAN....see selection list.

June 5, 2003 - Fourteen swimmers, including two Synchronized Swimmers have been named to Jamaica's 2003 CCCAN Team. The swimmers who have been selected for PAN AM Games will not compete at the CCCAN but will instead continue their training program. The team will depart for Mexico on June 28.....see selection list.

June 5, 2003 - Twenty Six swimmers, ages 10-14 have been named to the new ASAJ Development Squad. The squad which will focus on the swimmers preparation for National representation will train together once each week - the training schedule, which will include a swim camp July 21-26 will be published shortly. The selected swimmers, their parents and coaches are invited to meeting on Monday June 9 where full details of the programme will be discussed....please contact the ASAJ Office for the time and venue......see list of swimmers

MAY

May 21, 2003 - The ASAJ Swimming Technical Committee approved a proposal for a new ASAJ Development Squad. The Squad of twenty five 10 to 14 year olds will be coached by Orlando Estrada and will focus on stroke improvement while preparing the swimmers for possible National Squad and Team selection. The USS "A" time standard will be the main selection criteria. The proposal will be submitted to the ASAJ Council on June 4 for ratification....more anon!

May 18, 2003 - After three days of exciting competition which saw twenty (20) of the seventy (70) meet records falling, the Y-Speedos continued their dominance in recent competitions by walking away with the Team High Point Trophy. In addition to the Team High Point trophy, eleven (11) Individual High point trophies were won by swimmers from three different teams....results

APRIL

April 21, 2003 - The 2003 CARIFTA Swimming Championships closed with a bang with Jamaica winning by a clear margin over the defending champions Trinidad and Tobago. T&T were too strong in the Water Polo Competition as they won Gold in the Male and Female division. Aruba took top honours in the Synchronized Swimming Competition.....results

April 20, 2003 - In their last game of the CARIFTA Water Polo Championships, the Jamaican Male team lost 11-1 to Trinidad and Tobago. Despite this loss, Jamaica have played very well, especially considering that no international Water Polo has been played by a National Team in almost 10 years. With this win Trinidad have secured the Gold Medal.

April 20, 2003 - Jamaica steadily opened up their lead at the CARIFTA Swimming Championships finishing the day on 520.5 points, 85.5 ahead of the defending champions, Trinidad and Tobago. A total of 39 records have fallen in only 2 days of competition - 1 Jamaican National, 16 CARIFTA Meet records, 19 All Comers records and 3 National Age Group Records....results

April 20, 2003 - Jamaica and the Netherlands Antilles this afternoon played to an exciting 3-3 tie in Game 5 of the CARIFTA Water Polo competition.

April 20, 2003 - Out of the 48 swims by Jamaicans in the Day 2 preliminary heats of the CARIFTA Swimming Championships, 31 made it to the finals. 

April 19, 2003 - Jamaica leads the Swimming points standings after Day 1 on the CARITAS Swimming Championships as eight records fall. 13 year old, Alia Atkinson, swam 2:45.10 to set new Jamaican National Record in the 200 M Breaststroke while making the Pan American Games qualifying time....more info and ...results

April 10, 2003 16 Year old Bajan Bradley Ally has been swimming up a storm at the NCSA Junior Nationals in Orlando.....boy is he swimming fast!

April 2, 2003 - On Day 3 action at the US Open Spring Championships, both Jamaicans swimming failed to qualify for the 200 Freestyle finals but both performances were encouraging as Dawn Chuck split 1:02.67 and 1:03.76 to finish 79th in a new PR of  2:06.45 bettering her old time by over a second. Jamaica's premier performer internationally, Janelle Atkinson is returning to competition after surgery on both shoulders and and a missing a season of college swimming, finished 80th in a solid time of 2:06.49 splitting 1:01.41and 1:05.08.

April 2, 2003 - At the US Open Spring Championships on day 2 only one Jamaican was in action. Dawn Chuck finished 45th in the 100 metre freestyle clocking 58.28 splitting at 28.14 bettering her previous best of 58.31. For the Caribbean the Bajan Bradley Ally was at it again placing 22nd in the 200 Backstroke Bonus finals in a time of 2:07.41 slightly slower than his prelims time of 2:07.09.

March 29, 2003 - At the Pre CARIFTA Development Meet swam today at the National Stadium Pool, Kendese Nangal (Blue Seal Swim Club) timed 34.35 in the 8 & Under 50 M Free and Raynae Hall (Y-Speedos) 38.84 in the 8 & Under 50 M Butterfly to set new National and All Comers Age Group Records. Jamaica's National CARIFTA Swim Team showed good form with a number of personal best times. A good day of competition was had by all, as the CARIFTA Water Polo and Synchronized Swimmers also looked good....meet results

March 17, 2003 - The ASAJ has named fifteen female and sixteen male swimmers to the Water Polo Male and Female Squads preparing for the CARIFTA 2003 Swimming Championships which will be held in Jamaica April 19-21.....more

March 16, 2003 - The ASAJ tonight named 30 swimmers, 15 female and 15 male, the represent Jamaica at the 2003 CARIFTA Swimming Championships to be held at the National Stadium Pool, April 19-21. The Water Polo Squad will be posted on Monday. The CARIFTA and other National Squad Swimmers will commence training on Thursday March 20, with National Coach Jackie Walter, National Development Coach Orlando Estrada and Assistant Coach Michael Wilson.

March 16, 2003 - At an Emergency Meeting held today, Council approved a Pre CARIFTA Development Meet programme to replace the canceled Dean Martin Meet. Due to a clash with Boys Champs, the Development Meet will was moved to March 29, 2003. In a preview of the CARIFTA 2003 daily competition schedule, the Development Meet will included Swimming, Water Polo and Synchronized swimming all in the same day. The Swimming Judges will go ahead as planned and will include practical training during the afternoon swimming session.

March 15, 2003 - The ASAJ will be hosting a FINA sponsored Synchronized Swimming Judges Clinic March 19-23, 2003. The FINA Instructor will be Dot Padget, a Canadian who is on the FINA Judges "B" List. Mrs. Padget has been involved in Synchronized Swimming most of her life and still swims at the Masters Level. She currently serves on Canada's High Performance Management Team as the International Officials Leader. Persons wishing to attend the clinic can call the ASAJ Office (995-9200 - Monday to Friday) for further details.

March 15, 2003 - FINA has approved the 2003 CARIFTA Swimming Championships and the 2004 Caribbean Island Swimming Championships as qualifying competitions for the 2004 Olympic Games. Both competitions will be held in the National Stadium Pool, Kingston Jamaica.

March 2, 2003 - The Y-Speedos today won the Serge Island Dairies Age Group Swimming Championships in an exciting finish. The Y-Speedos scored 2075 points to hold off a strong challenge from the Tornadoes Swim Club who scored 1968. The Royals Swim Club was third with 186. 23 records, 19 meet and 4 age group, were broken during the four days of competition. March 1, 2003 - The Y-Speedos eased into a very slim 7 point lead after an exciting day of competition in the Serge Island Dairies Age Group Swimming Championships. 12 meet records have fallen while Kendese Nangle and the 8 & Under Girls 200 M Freestyle Relay team smashed National Age Group Records. February 23, 2003 - Thirty Seven Judges yesterday attended a judges Clinic aimed at preparing them for the CARIFTA Swimming Championships being hosted by Jamaica in April. The clinic format included both classroom and deck time. Special thanks to the YMCA for providing the venue. The next clinic is scheduled for March 8.

February 22, 2003 - Serge Island Dairies is to sponsor the Walter Rodgers Age Group Swimming Championships which will dive into action on Thursday February 27th, 2003. An massive 440 swimmers have entered the fours day Age Group and Masters Competitions, 45 more than in 2002. Serge Island will officially announce their sponsorship next week.

February 21, 2003 - Trinidad's Bovell was in awesome form winning the 200 Yard IM in NCAA leading time of 1:44.21 while Panama's Coparoppa takes siver in the 50 Free and has the fastest split in the 200 yard free relay to help Auburn to a new meet record

February 16, 2003 - Alia Atkinson today swam 1:16.06 on the Florida Senior Circuit to smash her own National 100 Metre Breaststroke Record of 1:17.11 set at the CISC last summer. Atkinson also broke Angela Chuck's seven year old 13-14 National Age Group 50 Metre Freestyle record of 27.99 with a fantastic 27.85. Well done Alia...keep it up! ..... February 15, 2003 - Immaculate High Girls, Campion College Boys and the University of the West Indies walked away with the top honours at the Mayberry Investments Schools Swim Meet which ended at the National Stadium Pool today. Brad Hamilton continued to impress, as he claimed three of twelve Meet Records set....results

February 14, 2003 - In exciting finish to the Mayberry Investments Prep/Primary Schools Swim Meet, Wolmers Prep (439 points) pulled off a double victory winning the Overall High Points Trophy by a narrow 10 point margin over Hillel Academy (429) but dominated the Female Division, with a margin of 173 points also over Hillel. In the Male division however, Hillel swam will to score 244 points to eek out a 2 point win over Mona Prep. Excelsior Primary took the Primary School High point trophy scoring 66.5. Hopefield Prep's Blair Steel was the swimmer of the day, breaking all 4 of the 7-8 50 metre event records. A total of 16 records were broken.....meet results

February 9, 2003 - Mayberry Investments Ltd. has renewed it's sponsorship of the Mayberry Investments Schools Swim Meet to be held February 14-15, 2003. Over 1,100 Prep, Primary, High School and University swimmers are expected to enter the competition. Stay tuned for more information and competition results.

February 2, 2003 - The Y-Speedos today retained the Karl Dalhouse Trophy scoring 1511.5 points to the Tornadoes Swim Club who was second with 1252.5 and the Sting Rays of Cayman third with 336.5. The Tornadoes (5) and the Y-Speedos (4) swimmers combined to break nine more records. In the Masters Category, the Tornadoes Masters (148 points) maintained their lead over the Y-Speedos (113) to cop the Karl Dalhouse Masters Trophy, the first time that a trophy was being offered for Masters Swimming in Jamaica. The Aruba Dolphins Masters were third with 12 points.....meet results....full press release

February 1, 2003 - Ten meet records fell on day two of the Karl Dalhouse Swim Meet as the Y-Speedos (990.5) has widened the lead in the points standings. Jevon Atkinson (Tornadoes) leads the list of record breakers with three. The Tornadoes Masters swimmers still have the edge over the Y-Speedos scoring 120 points....meet results

JANUARY

January 31, 2003 - The Karl Dalhouse Swim Meet got off to a good start despite light problems at the National Stadium Pool. Meanwhile, the Y-Speedos Girls 8 & Under 200 M Freestyle Relay team smashed not only the Meet Record, but the National and Allcomers Age Group Records swimming 2:35.78. Matthew Stewart (Tornadoes) swam 4:29.53 in the 15 and Over 400 M Freestyle break the Meet record. After 24 events, the Y-Speedos have edged into the lead with 382 points while the Tornadoes Swim Club is second (336.50) and the Sting Rays of Cayman third with 75.5.The Tornadoes Swim Club Master Swimmers (29) are just 4 points ahead of the Y-Speedos (25) .........meet results

January 29, 2003 - The newly formed ASAJ Water Safety Committee met for the first time today at the National Stadium Pool. The Committee presently has three members; Peter Henry, Chairman (Y-Speedos parent), Althea Blair (Tornadoes parent) and Tanissa Martindale (Canadian Volunteer). The ASAJ is looking for four (4) other members to join the group for the next meeting scheduled for February 11. Interested persons may contact the ASAJ by email or telephone. The primary objective of the Committee will be to improve the level of safety around the pool. The Safety Committee should be officially ratified by the ASAJ Council next week.

January 28, 2003 - Swimmers from Cayman, Aruba, Curacao and Panama will be coming to take part in the 8th renewal of the ‘Y’ Speedos’ Karl Dalhouse International Memorial Swim Meet.  Which begins at 5.30pm on Friday, January 31st 2003 at the National Stadium Swimming Pool and continues until Sunday, February 2nd....more

January 23, 2003 - The Jamaican Institute of Sports (INSPORT) and the ASAJ have joined hands to initiate a National Learn to Swim programme which is being dubbed SwimJamaica. Programme development will begin on Monday January 27 when the ASAJ's new National Development Coach, Orlando Estrada, and Tanissa Martindale, a Canadian CGA Volunteer, start work at the National Stadium Pool. SwimJamaica is expected to launch a pilot project targeting inner city Primary School students within three weeks. Look out for more information in the coming weeks!

January 18, 2003 - Thirteen persons today attend the first Judges Training Seminar of 2003. The seminar, which was conducted by  FINA Starter John Eyre and ASAJ Referee John Lopez,  focused on Turn Judging as well as reviewing the fundamentals of Time Keeping. The next Swimming Judges Seminar, scheduled for Saturday March 8, 2003, will continue to prepare the Judges for their duties at CARIFTA 2003, April 19-21, 2003.

January 16, 2003 - The first of three CARIFTA 2003 Swimming Judges training seminars will be held this Saturday (January 18) at the SDF Training Room. The session which will focus on TIMEKEEPING AND TURN JUDGING will start at 2:00 PM and end at 4:30 PM. ALL PERSONS WHO INTEND TO JUDGE AT CARIFTA 2003 ARE ASKED TO ATTEND.

January 10, 2003 - Jamaica's Minister of Sport, the Hon. Portia Simpson-Miller today officially handed over Coach Orlando Estrada to the ASAJ. Coach Estrada who will the role of National Development Coach will train the National Squad three times each week, help the Swimming Association to develop a National Learn to Swim Programme and work to develop the nations swim coaches. ASAJ President, John Eyre, thanked the Jamaican and Cuban Governments for the assistance given to Jamaican Swimming.

January 1, 2003 - Canada's Olympic Medalist Charmaine Crooks will give motivational talk to the Jamaican National Squad Swimmers on Wednesday January 8th at the SDF Training Room, 31 Phoenix Ave. Crooks, who was a fantastic 800 M runner was actually born in Mandeville, Jamaica. She is now a Sports and Media Consultant....see more on Charmaine Crooks.....still more! The ASAJ would like to thank Vilma Charlton (a swimming parent and past Olympian herself) and Charmaine Crooks for this special treat!
