In the
Day 4 Finals of the Central American and Caribbean Swimming Championships
Jamaica added 2 Gold and 1 Bronze while setting 2 new CCCAN an 1 National
Age Group Records.
Janelle Atkinson swam the 11th fastest 800 M Freestyle time in
the world for 2001, winning the Gold and shattering the CCCAN 18 and Over
Championship record. Atkinson had the fastest reaction time and was first
off the blocks. She increased her lead throughout the race and finished in
8:39.16, 50 seconds ahead of the Silver Medalist Martinez Imelda (Mexico).
Although not tapered, she was just 4 seconds off her best and Jamaican
National Record time set in the 2000 Olympic Games. Atkinson is still
recovering from her remedial surgery completed in April and her impressive
time will boost her confidence as she prepares for the Goodwill Games in
Australia this September.
Angela Chuck made it two (2) Gold and two (2) Bronze Medals when she won the
18 and Over 200 M Individual Medley with a personal best and new CCCAN
Championship Record time of 2:27.54. Chuck and the eventual Silver medallist,
Nancy Garcia (Mexico) swapped the lead on four occasions and with Chuck
trailing by a body length with 25 meters to go, she dug deep and passed
Garcia just 5 meters from the wall. Garcia finished with a time of 2:28.14.
Alia Atkinson defied her own doubts and swam personal best 2:36.57 to set a
new 11-12 200 M Individual Medley Jamaican National Age Group Record and
mining the Bronze medal in the process. At the final turn, Atkinson was a
clear second behind Mexico’s Elizabeth Hernandez but could not hold on and
finished fourth. Atkinson was later moved up to third when Hernandez was
judged to have false started and was disqualified. Puerto Rican Coral Lopez
won the Gold with a time of 2:35.04. With a previous best time of 2:46.03,
Atkinson has improved her time by an impressive 10 seconds.
In the 13-14 100 M Butterfly, Raine Paulson-Andrews swam a personal best
time of 1:09.21 to finish in 7th. Paulson-Andrews had worked
herself into third with 20 meters to go, but faded in the last 10 meters.
Jamaica’s
now has ten medals (6 Gold and 4 Bronze) and with 76 events completed, have
moved up into 7th place with an impressive 113 points.
