On the penultimate day of the Central
American and Caribbean Swimming Championships, Jamaicans continued to shine
breaking one meet and three Jamaican records while adding 4 medals to the
countries tally.
Jamaica’s
7 Gold, 1 Silver and 6 Bronze medals ranks fifth out of 29 countries. With
102 events completed,
Mexico
continues lead the points standings with 1115.5 points, 220 ahead of
Venezuela. Jamaica’s 150 points ranks 7th..
Janelle Atkinson and Tamara Swaby both swam
personal best times in the 200 M Butterfly. Despite swimming 2:18.78 and
breaking the Jamaican National Record Atkinson had to settle for the Silver
being touched out by
Mexico’s
Paola Espana who swam 2:18.01 to set a new 18 and Over CCCAN Championship
Record. Tamara Swaby improved her own PB by 3 seconds to finish 6th
with a time of in 2:23.74. Atkinson increased her medal count to 6 when she
struck Gold in the 18 and Over 100 M Backstroke winning the event in a
personal best time of 1:06.69 just .18 seconds off Lydia Gordon’s five year
old National Record. In the same event Angela Chuck, who had won the 200 M
Backstroke, swam a personal best time of 1:11.27 to place 6th.
Ramon James, who attends
Maryland
University, took the Bronze in the Male 100 M Backstroke. Ben Neisser was
the overwhelming favorite to win but opened the door when he had a bad turn
at the 50 M mark. Coming off the turn, just a meter separated Neisser,
Victor Bayata (Mexico) and Jamaica’s Ramon James but Neisser swam away
touching in 57.56 ahead of Bayata (59.61). James improved his on preliminary
time to finish third in 1:00.19, taking the Bronze.
Dominic Lee ended his medal drought when he
won the Bronze in the Male 200 M Breaststroke lowering the Jamaican Age
Group Record he had set in the preliminary heats.
Venezuela’s Andara Leopoldo, the CCCAN 11-12 record holder won the event by
swimming 2:30.31. Alfonso Espinosa (DOM REP) touched in 2:32.89 and Lee
third in 2:33.55.
In the 13-14 200 M Individual Medley,
Allison Bardowell swam 2:32.07 to lower the National Age Group Record
(2:32.68) she had set at the Caribbean Island Swimming Championships in
Aruba last year. Bardowell finished 5th while Raine
Paulson-Andrews swam 2:34.12 to finish 8th.
With only .75 seconds separating the eight
finalists, the 15-17 Male 50 Freestyle promised to be a fast and exciting
race. After swimming personal best time of 25.01 in the prelims,
Jamaica’s
Andrew Saunders had a great start, but
Trinidad’s
George Bovell and Ryan Yearwood took the lead with Bovell winning in a fast
23.97. Yearwood took second touching in 24.04 and Bajan Cliff Gittens third,
24.26. Saunders swam under 25 seconds for the first time to finish 6th
in 24.96.
