39 SWIMMERS INVITED TO JOIN NATIONAL SWIM SQUAD

September, 14, 2001 - With four major international swimming competition scheduled for 2002, the Amateur Swimming Association of Jamaica has announced that thirty-nine (39) swimmers, fifteen (15) of whom are either living or training overseas, have been invited to the join the National Swim Squad for the period September 2001 to February 2002. The swimmers will immediately begin preparation for CARIFTA (March), CISC (July), the Commonwealth (July) and CAC Games (October).

The National Senior Squad has increased by three (3) to fourteen (14) as Alia Atkinson (Fort Lauderdale Swim Club), Adi Atkinson (Fort Lauderdale Swim Club) and Dominic Lee (Tornadoes Swim Club) have all improved their times significantly and have met the faster Senior Squad qualifying times. All but one (Dominic Lee) of the Senior Squad Swimmers are currently living (3) or attending school (11) overseas.

The Junior Squad will enjoy three new faces as Tornadoes Swim Club’s Gillian Stewart and Renee Wright along with Y-Speedos Alford Green have met the qualifying times. Twenty-five (25) swimmers, two (2) overseas and twenty-three (23) local based, have qualified for the Junior Squad.

The local based Squad Qualifiers are being invited to a meeting with the National Coach Jackie Walter and the Swimming Committee members on September 19, 2001, where the National Development plan for the 2001 – 2002 season and Squads qualifying requirements will be discussed. To maintain a place on the squad, swimmers must commit to and sustain a minimum level of training (see National Development Plan - www.swimjamaica.com). The overseas based swimmers will be comtacted by email. The swimmers commitment and competition performances are review every six months.

The ASAJ also announced that the minimum age for the National Senior Squad has been reduced from 13 to 11 years and that the Squad membership will be reviewed twice instead of three times each year.
