After
four days of intense and exciting swimming at the National Stadium
Pool, it came down to the last relay events for the Y-Speedos Swim
Club to seal their grip as the 2002 Walter Rogers Age Group Swimming
Champs. With just 20 points separating the Y-Speedos and the
defending champions Tornadoes Swim Club at the start the final
session, the stage was set for some fast and intense competition.
Six of the twelve meet records were set in the session as the point
standings fluctuated with each event. In the end, the Y-Speedos,
scored 1928.5 points, 56 ahead of the Tornadoes (1872.5) to regain
the Walter Rogers Age Group Champions Trophy, which they last held
in 1999.
The
Marlins Swim Club, led by the girls 8 and Under high points champion
Samantha Spence, scored 246 points to secure the third place trophy,
while the Blue Seal Swim Club (167) and the Flying Fish Ambassadors
(164) battled it out for 4th and 5th
Tornadoes
Rene Wright got the final session going with a bang, breaking
Allison Bardowell’s 11-12 200 M Butterfly record of 2:57.26,
swimming 2:55.91. Two events later, Tiffany Walton was equally
impressive in the 13-14 200 Butterfly as she posted a 2:44.84 to
lower the meet record by 3 seconds. Butterfly seemed to be the
stroke of the day as Tornadoes Timothy Wong continued the trend by
eclipsing his own 15 & Over 200 M Butterfly record set in 2001
winning the Gold in a fast 2:01.41 for his second record of the
meet. Chris Fisher’s 15 and Over 100 M Breaststroke meet record
(1:12.80) which had lasted for 14 years, tumbled as Tornadoes
Dominic Lee swam a personal best time of 1:10.86, increasing his
record haul to two.
As the
meet climaxed with the Medley relays, two records would fall as the
swimmers fought to ensure maximum points. The Y-Speedos team of
Ramon Walton, Leachim palmer, Matthew Williams and Donovan Todd swam
away from the field to win the 9-10 200 M Medley Relay event in
2:35.51, nipping the old record of 2:35.79. In the last event of the
competition, Anthony Morrison, Dominic Lee, Timothy Wong and Matthew
Stewart swam 4:20.76 to seal a spectacular competition by breaking
the 15 and Over 200 M Medley Record.
Dominic Lee and Lemone Lowe (Speedos) won the Achievement Awards for
the 13-14 and 15 & Over age groups, scoring 13 points each. These
awards are given to the swimmers who score the most points based on
the United States Time Standards. Other notable performances came
from Steele Blair (Flying Fish Ambassadors), who walked away with
