Jamaica’s 2000 Olympic swimmer Angela Chuck was this
week honoured with the Florence Filippo and
Arlene Gorton awards by Brown University for her
performances in and out of the pool during the 2001-2002 NCAA
Division 1 swimming season.
At the Universities Swimming Banquet, Chuck was
awarded the Florence Filippo for contributing the most
to the success of Brown’s women’s swim team. Chuck consistently won
points for the school by dominating the 50, 100 and 200 yard
freestyle events and was one of two swimmers from the school who
qualified for the highly competitive NCAA Swimming Championships.
The team members and coaches vote to determine the winner of this
highly prestigious award.
Later at the All Sports Banquet copped the
Arlene Gorton award that is presented to the female varsity
athlete who most consistently displays the ideals of sportsmanship
and fair play. The award is named of honour of former Brown
Associate Director of Athletics Arlene Gorton in recognition of her
role in developing women's intercollegiate athletics at Brown
University.
Chuck, who graduates from Brown University this year,
will be returning to Jamaica next month to complete her preparations
for the Commonwealth Games in July.
