The region's best female swimmers had 8 individual appearances
in the top 150 rankings released by the sports governing body
FINA (Federation Internationale de Natation) .This was achieved
on the strength of performances of French swimmer Malia Metela
and Jamaica's Janelle Atkinson.
Malia who competed at the CARIFTA level with great distinction for the
combined French territories still holds records at those
championships for the 11-12 and 13-14 age groups as well as the
15-17 100 metre butterfly. She has the only top 10 time with a
gold medal winning 25.18 done at the US National Swimming
Championships in Maryland in August which places her 9th
globally.
She underlines her tremendous sprint credentials by having top 50 times
in the following events the 100metre freestyle 39th (55.84) ,50
metre butterfly 46th (27.68) and the 100 metre butterfly 41st
(1:00.44).
Janelle Atkinson the region's most dominant swimmer in the middle to
long distance freestyle events owning the records at the 200,400
and 800 events at the senior level at CARIFTA ,CISC (Caribbean
Islands Swimming Championships) and CCCAN (Central American and
Caribbean) Championships is having a rebuilding year. She
remains world ranked despite taking a year off from collegiate
swimming to fully recuperate from surgery on both shoulders and
only returning to competiton in April.
Atkinson's highest ranking is 62nd in the 400 metre freestyle
at 4:15.99 .She also holds positions 121st in the 800 metre
event 144th in the 100 freestyle in a new national record of
57.21 and 147th in the 200 at 2:03.27.
The only relay team figured in the relay rankings and that was
the Jamaican team who placed 60th based on their 3:53.58 5th
placing showing at the PAN -AMERICAN games in the 400 metre
freestyle relay.
