With no Jamaicans swimming, glory had
to be gained on a regional basis through the efforts of our
Caribbean colleagues from Barbados' Bradley Ally and Sean Dehere
representing Fort Lauderdale swim team.
The presence of Venezuelan Olympian Richard Moasterio who is also the current CAC champion and record holder in the 400 3:57.63 and 1500 15:39.90 did not prove daunting for the 16 year old phenom as he rose to the challenge of his quality competitor. In the 200 meter Butterfly, Ally gave the Venezuelan a huge scare. He led his more heralded rival at the half way mark 1:04.09 to 1:04.26 but lost it at the death when the CAC champ recovered to out split Ally, 1:07.60 to 1:08.31 to finish in a total time of 2:11.86 to Bradley's 2:12.40.
The Man with the broken trident then
set his sights on the 200 metre Breastroke and the 200 individual
medley. In both events he took the measure of Eric Donnelly Pan
American 400 Individual Medley silver medalist and a member of the
US 2002 Pan Pacific and World Short Course Championship teams. In
the shorter version the Individual Medley the 200 ( in which he was
ranked 3rd for all club swimmers in the 15-16 age group in the
States) he took the lead at the 100 metre mark 1:03.16 to 1:0.04 and
though with a slower split for the second 100 1:09.61 to 1:08.95 he
did enough to take the title 2:12.77 to 2:12.99.
In the 200 Breastroke he came from
behind 1:15.86 1:15.79 at the halfway mark to power past his
American counterpart and win in 2:35.36 to his competitor's 2:36.77
to complete the double as he took the 100 in 1;10.28 earlier in the
meet
Sean Dehere, a Carifta medal hopeful
at this year's edition of the Championships here in Jamaica
performed well also taking third in the 100 Freestyle in 56.50 and
2nd in the 50 freestyle, 25.34, being just pipped by Brett Irvine
from Pine Crest who took the "splash and dash" in 25.32
