EIGHT SIX (86) SWIMMERS SELECTED FOR JAMAICA'S CISC TEAM
June 25, 2004
The Amateur Swimming Association of Jamaica will host the 15th renewal of the Caribbean Islands Swimming Championships (CISC) at the National Stadium Pool from July 1 – 6, 2004. The competition will see action in three (3) aquatic disciplines – Competitive Swimming, Synchronized Swimming and Water Polo and will also be used as a qualifier for swimming hopefuls to the 2004 Olympic Games. Following on the outstanding performance in competitive swimming at the recently held CARIFTA Swimming Championship, the Amateur Swimming Association of Jamaica (ASAJ) is pleased to announce the following 86 member delegation to carry its banner high in the respective disciplines.
This will be the first time in recent memory that Jamaica has been able to field a full strength team at the Caribbean Island Swimming Championships, which has prompted ASAJ President to challenge the swimming team to aim to win the Championships for the first time ever. Included in the 45 member swim team are all of Jamaica’s Olympic qualifiers, giving Jamaicans an opportunity to see all of the islands swimming stars in competition.
With FINA designating the Championships an Olympic Qualifying event many high performance swims are expected as the swimmers seek a place on their Olympic National Teams. Although already Qualifying in the 50 and 100 M Freestyle, Jamaica’s Alia Atkinson will be hoping to make the 100 M Breaststroke time of 1:13.34. Among Jamaica’s hopefuls is Tamara Swaby, who will be making her Olympic bid in the 100 M Butterfly by swimming faster than 1:02.65.
The twenty six (26) players selected to Jamaica’s Male and Female Water Polo Teams, are still benefiting from excellent training support provided by the visiting Hungarian Water Polo Team BVSC. The Jamaicans will be using the Caribbean Island Swimming Championships as a warm up for the Pan American Junior Water Polo Championships to be held in El Salvador later in the month. The teams recently won Gold at the CARIFTA Games.
Thirteen (13) swimmers will represent Jamaica in the 12 and Under, 13-15 and 16-18 age groups of the Synchronized Swimming Solo and Duet Routine Competitions.
