FIFTY SEVEN SWIMMERS SELECTED FOR JAMAICA’S 2005 CCCAN TEAM

The Amateur Swimming Association of Jamaica (ASAJ) has announced a team of fifty seven (57) swimmers and eleven (11) Team Officials to represent Jamaica at the XXIII Central American and Caribbean Swimming Championships (CCCAN) which will be held in the Dominican Republic August 1-9, 2005.

Jamaica will participate in the swimming, synchronized swimming and water polo competitions. Twelve swimmers, led by Brad Hamilton, Alia Atkinson and veteran Tamary Swaby, have qualified for the swimming events. Hamilton and Atkinson will travel to the Dominican Republic directly from Montreal where they will represent Jamaica at the 11th FINA World Swimming Championships.

Jhaenelle Adams and Stephanie Barrett will compete in the 13-15 Duet and Solo Competition. CCCAN will be the first test for Adams and Barrett since the ASAJ brought in the American Coach Khadija Cutcher to launch it’s new National Synchro Squad’s training programme. Both girls are hoping to qualify for the ASUA Pan Am Junior Synchronized Swimming Championship to be held in Orlando Florida in August.

For the first time ever, Jamaica will enter three (3) teams in the CCCAN Water Polo competition.  Jamaica’s 18 and Under Male and Female Team will not only be playing for a medal position, but also to improve their ranking in the region thus ensuring a place in the 2006 ASUA Pan Am Junior Water Polo Championships. The top four (4) teams in each division will automatically qualify for the Championships which will be held in Canada. The men’s team will however, be using this Competition as a gauge in their preparation for their next major challenge, the 13th FINA Men’s Junior Water Polo World Championships being held in Argentina October 7-15, 2005.  The CCCAN 18 and Under Team forms the core of Jamaica’s Junior Men’s Team preparing for the World Championships.

Jamaica’s 15 and Under Men’s team, while inexperienced in international competition, has shown rapid improvement in local competitions and training. Coach Laszlo Borbely is confident that all three teams will perform well and continue Jamaica’s rise in regional water polo rankings. The ASAJ has named squads of fifteen (15) for each of the three teams, which will be reduced to thirteen (13) before they leave for Santo Domingo.

The ASAJ named eleven Team Officials, headed by Chef de Mission Mark Jones. The Medical Team and list of Technical Officials will be published as soon as the names are confirmed. The team will depart Jamaica on August 1 and return on August 9.
