CARIFTA SWIMMING CHAMPIONSHIPS 2005

Jamaica’s National Swim Team left the island today to compete in the 2005 CARIFTA Swimming Championships which will be held in Curacao, March 31 to April 3. The team of fifty five (55) consists of twenty nine (29) swimmers, four (4) synchronized swimmers, thirteen (13) players who will participate in the male water polo competition and a Management Team, led by Chef de Mission and Swim Team Manager Gail Gascoigne.

Although the team will miss the elite level performances of Alia Atkinson who is unable to participate due to prior commitments, the Jamaicans are expected to challenge for one of the top three spots in the Swimming Competition. Jamaica’s fast improving male Water Polo Team will face stiff challenges from rivals Trinidad and Tobago and Curacao as they defend the crown won in 2004. While Aruba is expected to continue their domination of the Synchronized Competition, the Jamaican, who will compete with Solo’s and Duet’s are expected to be competitive.

The Swim Team will be coached by two new National Coaches; Head Coach Barry Brown and Assistant Coach Lynval Lowe. Both are acting as National Coaches for the first time. Jackie Walter has accompanied the team in an advisory role. The Water Polo team is coaches by Lazslo Borbely while Katherine Lym-Sang is coaching the Synchronized Swimmers.
