14, 2004…..Immaculate Conception and St. Georges
College were yesterday crowned
Champions of the first ICD Inter-Secondary Schools Water Polo Competition played
at the National Stadium Pool. Campion College, led by good performances from a
number of national swimmers claimed the Silver Medal in both sections while
Ardenne took the Male Bronze Medal and St. Andrew High the Bronze in the Female
Division.
Jamie
Smith, Captain of St. Georges College, was the top
scorer in the competition with 32 goals. Immaculates’Vanacia Johnson was the most prolific female scorer with 20.
Ardennes Ewan Oliver surprised the crowd when he won the Best Male Goalie
Award. National Representative Rosnie Strudwick (Campion College)
was names top female goalie.
The
Most Valuable Player Awards went to Rene Wright (St.
Andrew) and Sean Campbell (Ardenne).
With
over 120 swimmers from five male and five female teams participating in the
first schools water polo competition in 12 years, the event was considered a
success. While the level of performances varied considerably, the energy level
was high during all of the games, regardless of the final score.
The
ASAJ is now putting plans in place
for a Schools Water Polo League to be held during the next schools term. In
referring to this competition, ASAJ
President John Eyre, asked the swimmers to continue training, especially they
could be selected to represent Jamaica
at the Caribbean Island Swimming Championships being held in Jamaica this
July.
