Coralie Balmy and Malia Metella Swim well in
the France Cup
November 26, 2007
Two former CARIFTA standouts
Coralie Balmy and Malia Metella did well at the recent France Cup held in
Montpellier France yesterday. The best moment from the French Caribbean duo had
to be Balmy's win over French distance queen Laura Manaudou in 800 M Freestyle
8:35.48 to 8:38.20. The win is a significant confidence booster for the young
Balmy as Manaudou was the world record holder in this event and the 1500 until
recently and is still the global standard bearer in the 400 M Free. Balmy until
recently was the 800 meter record holder at CARIFTA (swum in a 50 meter pool)
in the 13-14 age group until it was broken by M
Lightbourne (Bahamas).
Although Balmy had the biggest
win Metella had the most wins taking the 50 M Butterfly in 27.14, 100 M Free in
55.69, and the 100 M Butterfly in 1:00.76. At this year's CARIFTA held in
Jamaica she lost her 100 fly records in the 11-12 and 15-17 divisions to K
Williams (Trinidad and Tobago) and A Vanderpool-Wallace (Bahamas) but still
holds her 50 M Freestyle records in the 11-12 and 13-14 age groups.
Balmy were well placed in other
events: 400 M Free 4th (4:13.53), 400 M Individual medley 7th (4:57.75) and the
200 M Backstroke 7th (2:21.91).
