ASAJ PRESIDENT JOHN EYRE ELECTED TO CCCAN EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE

July 24, 2006

John Eyre, President of the Amateur Swimming Association of Jamaica was last week elected to the position of Secretary of the Central American and Caribbean Amateur Swimming Confederation (CCCAN) Executive Committee. The elections were held during the CCCAN Congress held at the Central American and Caribbean (CAC) Games in Cartegena, Columbia.

Eyre is the only new face on the CCCAN Executive Committee as the incumbent President Orban Mendoza (Puerto Rico), the Treasurer Bill Cody (Puerto Rico), three Vice Presidents: Errol Clarke (Barbados), Ishmeal Gonzalez (Guatemala) and Lilliam Jacobs (Dominican Republic) all returned unopposed.

There were two nominations for the position of Secretary vacated by Sergio Valente (Cuba): John Eyre (Jamaica) and Javier Careaga (President of the Mexican Swimming Federation and Member of the FINA Swimming Technical Committee). In the first round of balloting, Eyre and Careaga tied with 10 votes each, however the Jamaican prevailed in the second round of balloting. CCCAN voting has typically been controlled by the Spanish speaking Federations who are always the majority. Eyre’s win breaks that tradition as three Spanish speaking Federations voted for Eyre in the run off ballot.

The Central American and Caribbean Amateur Swimming Confederation, which is one of the four areas making up the Amateur Swimming Union of the Americas (ASUA), is responsible for overseeing the development of Aquatic Sports in the Caribbean and Central America region.

Eyre who was working at the CAC Games as a Swimming Referee returned to the island yesterday.
