Led by Senior Jamaica National Team Members Alia Atkinson and Brad Hamilton, Jamaica’s National Swim and Water Polo Teams will depart tomorrow for Barbados to compete in the 2006 CARIFTA Swimming Championships. The sixty nine (69) man Delegation consisting of thirty two (32) swimmers, thirteen (13) male Water Polo Players, thirteen (13) female Water Polo Players and a Management Team of eleven (11), will travel on Air Jamaica, departing at 12:45 p.m.
The swim team, who will seek to improve their 6th place position at last year’s Championship, held in Curacao, is the largest and strongest delegation to CARIFTA in recent times. Outstanding performances are expected from Atkinson and Hamilton, both fresh from the Commonwealth Games, as well as Kendese Nangle in the Girls 11-12 Age Group, David Bromfield, Steven Moodie and Matthew Chen in the Boys equivalent. Other top performers include Dominique Dawson (13-14 Girls), Gillian Millwood (15-17 Girls); Jason Adams, Andre-Marc Smith (13-14 Boys).
Jamie Smith, Captain of the Male Water Polo Team is hoping that the experience gained at the FINA Junior Water Polo World Championships last October will lift their performance to better their Silver Medal finish in 2005. The last CARIFTA Female Water Polo was played in 2004 and was won by Jamaica. Team Captain Mary Chambers will hope to repeat that performance.
